2000 Blaster-clutch does not engage@push lever embly. No tension in the clutch cable. Bike goes into gear?

Rode fine all day, just bought it for my daughter. Rocked the quad back and forth, still no engagement. Turns on with one kick, but as soon as I try first gear shuts off to lack of clutch engagement.
